In our final subscription concert of our 2018-2019 season, the National Concert Band of America takes you back to memories of community band concerts in the park where the musical program presented offered music to satisfy everyone’s taste. This concert takes place at Carl Sandburg Middle School, 8428 Fort Hunt Road, Alexandria VA 22308 on Sunday, May 5th, 2019 at 3 PM.

After our usual Opener and National Anthem, Interim Music Director Bill Terry and the National Concert Band of America offer Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture.” It’s encore is “Earle of Oxford March,” the first movement of the William Byrd Suite by Gordon Jacob. Then, providing something “lighter” in musical entertainment, we offer Leroy Anderson’s “Belle of The Ball.” The “Pique Dame Overture” by Franz von Suppe should be on every wind band’s program and is next on our program. Percy Grainger’s “Children’s March: Over The Hill and Far Away” is not heard very often which is why we offer it on our program. Warren Barker’s “That’s Entertainment” completely changes our musical offerings in this afternoon’s program. Persichetti”s “Pageant,” commissioned by Edwin Franko Goldman for the American Bandmasters Association  brings some serious wind band music to our program. An encore follows with Kenneth Alford’s “Army of the Nile” march. One of the first pieces of music I remember playing in high school is next on our program..”The Syncopated Clock” by Leroy Anderson. Our final selection is an exciting piece by James Curnow entitled “Rejouissance.” .

As in every National Concert Band performance we conclude our program with “Armed Forces Medley” in which we salute all veterans, past and present, of our armed forces. This is always followed by our signature song...”This Is My Country.”

This season we are performing an Encore, something we have not done in seasons past. Our Encore for this program is the well-known Kenneth Alford “Colonel Bogey March.”.
